Meet Carol & Master Deac
As a National Science Foundation Trainee, Carol earned a Doctorate in the psychology of human learning from Penn State University. Grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and American Philosophical Society have supported her research, and she has published widely in distinguished journals like the American Journal of Psychology and Medical Hypotheses. Her book WHERE MEDICINE FAILS (1986), acclaimed the authority in its field, is a driving force in the holistic health movement (Where Medicine Fails). Discovery of the feedback meditation technique, and the enlightenment breakthrough that followed, redirected Carol's life. A life of destiny began, devoted to teaching, testing and refining the new method, and to crafting self-tests to guide readers to their meditation goals. The work culminated in an efficient alternative to traditional meditation: STRAIGHT LINE MEDITATION: HOW TO RESTORE AWARENESS AND WHY YOU NEED TO. The book was near completion when destiny again intervened, giving the book a new dimension and adding a chapter to Carol's life. She was mysteriously led to Master Deac.

THE SWORD OF WISDOM
Chinese martial tradition wields a Sword of Wisdom. Master Deac Cataldo placed it in Carol's hands. They met several years ago at the Martial Arts Center in Orchard Park, New York.
“Intending only to escape the rain," writes Carol, "I went in. There I met Master Deac Cataldo, tenth degree Black Belt and Sixth Master of Karate dō. The Master said: ‘You know it is destiny that we meet.’ Strangely I did know, though I had no idea why this meeting was destined…”
Carol stayed and over time the wisdom of Karate dō was conveyed to her in face-to-face teachings as it had passed from Master to disciple through four and a half centuries. Its main message was identical to that which Carol's meditation book teaches:
“Awareness is everything.”
Learning in martial tradition is a transfer of power from teacher to student. Master Choe taught his disciple Master Deac:
"The power of my mind transfers to you, becoming the power of your mind."
“My teacher’s power is legendary," writes Carol. "You will feel it in these pages (from STRAIGHT LINE MEDITATION, 2009, Chapter One)."
Master Deac
Vito Domonic Cataldo - "Master Deac," is the Sixth and only living Master in his martial arts lineage. He contributes to the book a profound new wisdom source. The teachings of Karate dō (The Way of the Empty Hand) are woven through the chapters. They are presented in the very words Deac, as a young soldier, commanded to memory during seven years of intensive instruction with his teacher, Chinese Master Choe.
Seen to the right is Master Deac's kan-gi. The characters describe his
martial arts proficiency as
the speed of a lion and the precision of the
sharpest blade.
Master Deac's kan-gi and thumb print authenticate a students'
black belt promotion.
A member of the Army's famed regimental combat team the Wolf Hounds, Master Deac was a Battlefield Commissioned Officer in the Korean conflict. There he was singled out by Master Choe (Fifth Master of the tradition), to be his successor, and it was there that he was instructed one-on-one in movements of body and in a spiritual philosophy that share extraordinary elegance and power.
STRAIGHT LINE MEDITATION recounts Deac's training with his Buddhist Master. Here living enlightenment proves unintimidated by deafening rounds of artillery fire and the prospect of imminent death. Master Deac emerged from the deadilest conflict in US history with inspiring true stories and vital lessons to share. He teaches by living example that we can survive, and not only survive but be victorious. Today he devotes full time to teaching. Carol, an eighth degree black belt Master of Karate, is among his disciples.
